Information about Khat (Qaadka)

Khat (Qaadka) is a plant which contains cathinone (which is also the active ingredient in some illegal drugs). The leaves are chewed to release the chemical which produces a stimulant effect. Khat is currently legal, although the active ingredient (cathinone) is a Class B drug if extracted and purified.

The use of Khat is traditional among some specific communities. However, its use in Bolton has increased dramatically, including a growing popularity amongst the young.

Some of the effects of Khat can be things like: not sleeping very well; loss of appetite; breathing difficulties; high blood pressure; faster heart rate; dehydration; constipation; depression; feeling over-important; psychosis; hallucinations.
